Woodwitches have several spiritual and ceremonial rites which are performed at various times and for various reasons. However, it has to be said that one of the merriest, most colourful, and significant; is the rite of Handfasting. Handfasting has been around for countless ages and predates civil ceremonies and church marriages by millennia. Handfasting was fully recognised by ancient societies and was the right and proper way to pledge yourself to another. The Gathering Of Sherwood incorporates many of the ancient traditions in the rite which is performed before a fully consecrated altar in the majesty of Sherwood Forest. The rites usually take place in the summer months, and most often on Sundays for practical reasons... But Handfastings have also taken place in the winter months and even in the midst of snow.
