These days, there will be many who may ask the question: ‘Which Witch, Is Which’? This is quite understandable as Paganism and Witchcraft has seen an enormous growth of interest over the past fifty years and this has led to some considerable diversity in the craft. There may be many reasons for this, including the dawning of the ‘New Age,’ the inflexibility of more orthodox faiths, the repeal of the Witchcraft laws in 1951. (England) and  not least the emergence of Gerald Gardner, circa 1940. (Founder of Gardnerian Wicca.) Whatever, there are now almost as many branches of Paganism and Witchcraft - as there are Witches and Pagans!  For those who are new to the craft and Pagan ways there is understandable confusion. One is never quite sure of the differences between a Gardnerian or Alexandrian Witch, a Sea or Water Witch, or a Hedgewitch and a Kitchenwitch. (To name just a few.) There are Celtic tradition Witches, Saxon Witches, Wiccans and even Woodwitches, etc.  It has to be said that all this diversity and individuality make for a little snobbery and elitism in some craft quarters. Therefore, let us be quite clear, there is no one absolute path or tradition that is the definitive and true source of Witchcraft! (and that includes Woodwitches!) Irrespective of what some individuals / covens / groups / circles may claim regarding their origins, traditions and long lineage; no one path holds all the absolute truths or is the single true tradition. The Gathering Of Sherwood is a Pagan gathering - our beliefs, rituals and practices may be termed generally as Pagan. We practice and observe Pagan ways and beliefs in a manner which is notably different to many of the above named traditions. This does not mean that we are special, unique or  singularly enlightened. It simply means that we have come to practice the craft in ways which have evolved over time, and that in general terms we do not proscribe to much of the doctrine and hierarchy which is implicit in some other craft traditions. So, to answer the question: “Which Witch, Is Which’ ?  A Witch by whatever tradition or name is a Witch!  The essential requirements for becoming a Witch are sincerity and commitment - the rest will come with time, patience and experience.  With any form of learning it is always better to have the benefit of wisdom and experience from those who are accomplished. However, the right to be a Witch lies solely with YOU!
